WHAT IT IS:

  • Partial closing of vocal cords

  • Complete closing of vocal cords with loss of conciousness

  • A Problem in the Throat

Diagnostic Names: Vocal Cord Dysfunction, Laryngospasms, or Paradoxical Vocal Fold Movement

Upper respiratiory tract.  Larynx (voice box), Laryngopharynx, Vocal Cords, vocal fold, trachea or windpipe.

WHAT IT ISN'T:

  • Asthma - Although VCD sometimes co-exists with Asthma. 

  • Pulmonary Disease

  • Heart Disease, Condition, or Defect

  • Gastrointestinal Disease, Condition, or Defect

  • Mental/Psychological Issue - It is NOT in your head!

  • Panic Attack - Though panic attacks can be a side effect of VCD

VCD is a very real and very frightening condition!  It occurs when multiple factors present themselves at the same time.

Many people with VCD are typically high achievers, Type A personalities.
Types of people affected include dancers, musicians, singers and competitive athletes such as distance runners, skiers, soccer players, swimmers and many others. In many people, exercise brings on the attack.

Some patients are not high achievers, yet they develop symptoms as well.
